Can't get wp-prettyPhoto to work, for the life of me

Hi all,
I cannot get wp-prettyPhoto to work for the life of me. I have an image, sandwiched by an tag, with the rel="wp-prettyPhoto tag embedded in it, and it's linked to an image. In prettyPhoto's options, I have images set to be automatically placed and for all recognized types to be automatically replaced.
I have confirmed and confirmed again the REF tag.
wp-prettyPhoto is an active plug-in, running on WordPress 2.9.1 on PHP 5.
What the heck am I doing wrong???

I read the blog post, followed the directions exactly.. and it still doesn't work.
So I manually edited the code to set the correct value, confirmed that it looks correctly on the page... and still nothing.
I wish I could get it to work!
